Does the idea of spending your vacation in the United States sound appealing? The first step is to obtain an ESTA document on the Internet. This administrative document is valid for two years, during which you can travel to the United States without a visa. It allows multiple trips during its period of validity. Although electronic, the document is printable.
The ESTA document, to be filled out online only
Established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ESTA is an electronic travel authorization. Its purpose is to reinforce the security of the country and of passengers traveling by sea and air. ESTA authorization is part of the Visa Waiver Program, which has 38 signatory countries worldwide. If you are a national of one of these countries and have a valid passport, you can apply for ESTA.
Compared with the green form that used to be distributed on board aircraft and ships, the ESTA form is simpler to fill in electronically. You don’t have to go to the U.S. embassy or consulate to apply. You can apply for an ESTA yourself before departure, on the official US government website, or through an intermediary who will fill in the ESTA form on your behalf.
Bring your biometric (fingerprint) or electronic passport to complete the ESTA form: you’ll need it to provide your passport number, among other information. The U.S. authorities want to know a great deal about you to ensure that you do not pose a threat to U.S. homeland security. You’ll need to provide your full name, nationality, official address, date of birth and so on. Be sure to check all the information you provide: a single mistake and your ESTA authorization could be refused.
How long is ESTA authorization valid?
How valid is the ESTA document? That’s the question on everyone’s mind when they apply for this travel authorization. The ESTA document is valid for two years, but loses its validity when the passport expires, if the latter expires before – or is modified during – these two years. In the event of a new passport, the traveler must apply for a new ESTA. Refusal of an online application due to non-compliance with an admission criterion entails a visa application to the American embassy, in order to transit or stay temporarily on American territory.
During its period of validity, the ESTA document allows travelers to enter the United States several times, provided they comply with the rules set out in the visa waiver. In fact, only tourist trips, business stays and transits on American soil are authorized. What’s more, your trip to the USA must last a maximum of 90 days to be accepted.
You can also update your ESTA authorization if certain information about you changes. This is the case if your e-mail address or place of residence in the USA changes. All other changes require a new online application.
Does the ESTA document need to be printed?
The ESTA electronic document is not available in hard copy. However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authorizes downloading and printing of the authorization.
Please note that you will not be asked for your ESTA when you board your plane or clear customs. The ESTA is electronically linked to your passport, so simply reading your passport will give you access to your ESTA.
