The ESTA form was developed with a specific aim in mind: to make it easier for foreign nationals to enter the USA, while preserving the country’s internal security. To achieve this, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security draws up a profile of each traveler, in order to isolate those at risk. There are procedures to follow, such as filling in an online form.
To start the ESTA procedure, you need to be a member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). You must have a biometric (fingerprint) or electronic (microchip) passport and a return ticket to be eligible for ESTA. You’ll also need to prepare a temporary trip, such as business, tourism or transit, if you want to use ESTA. You can’t work, do an internship in the USA or study at an American university with an ESTA. Your trip to the USA must not exceed 90 consecutive days. If you are planning a longer tourist trip, you will need to apply for a visa at the American embassy.
When should I start the ESTA procedure?
You can apply for ESTA authorization by visiting the sites dedicated to entering the USA. These may be the official U.S. government site, or private sites. If you use a private site, you’ll be guided through the process step by step. As the application is made online, you can apply at any time. And yes, you don’t need to go to a US consulate or embassy to apply for an ESTA. So it’s easier and more convenient to apply for an ESTA than for a USA visa. You must apply no later than 72 hours before departure. If your travel is approved or refused, you’ll receive a reply within minutes of submitting your application. If your authorization is pending, you’ll have to wait 72 hours for a definitive answer. This is why we recommend that you apply at least 3 days before departure.
To obtain an ESTA, you need to complete an online application form. You’ll need to provide details such as your passport number, your nationality, the reason for your trip to the USA and the expiry date of your electronic or biometric passport.
Possible responses to ESTA procedures
If you’re one of those who travel without a visa, you’ll need ESTA authorization. Once you’ve submitted your authorization request via the registration site or the government website, you’ll receive three possible responses. The first option is authorized travel: authorization to embark for the USA. In this case, we recommend that you write down your ESTA number, or even print it out. Once obtained, the ESTA is valid for two years.
The second is a pending authorization, and a final response to your request will be sent to you within 72 hours. Don’t worry, this just means that the DHS is taking the time to consult your file in greater depth. The last possible response is that your request for authorization has been denied.
The ESTA system has been made more accessible, as the entire procedure is carried out online. You can register your authorization request and pay the application fee via one of the dedicated websites.
Even if you receive your ESTA and have a valid passport, the American authorities will decide whether or not you can enter the country. Travel to the USA will then be permitted if customs officials believe you pose no danger.
Bon voyage!
